Go mobile with Hotmail (Android, iPhone, Windows Phone)

Get the Hotmail app on your Android

The Hotmail app for Android is free. To get it, search for Hotmail in Google Play from your phone (choose the app by Microsoft+SEVEN).*

  • Get your email the instant it comes in.
  • All of your folders and subfolders are browsable.
  • Have more than one Hotmail account? Get them all in the one app.
  • Send photos via email from your phone to your friends.
  • Send, receive, and view attachments on your phone.
  • Calendar and contacts are synced to your phone.
With the Hotmail app on your Android phone, all your folders and subfolders are browsable.

*App may not be available in all countries or regions.

How do I get Hotmail on my Android phone without app?

You can also get Hotmail on your Android phone (versions 2.1 and above) without the app. To do so, follow these steps:

  1. On your phone, tap Email and then tap Add account.
  2. Enter your full Hotmail address: e.g. (username@hotmail.com) or (username@outlook.com), and password, and then tap Manual setup.
  3. When asked “What type of account is this?” tap Exchange.
  4. If your phone has a Domain field, leave it blank. If your phone has a Username field, enter your full Hotmail address, preceded by a “ \ ” (e.g. \username@hotmail.com).
(If the field is already filled in, make sure the info matches your full Hotmail address).
*Note: If the device only says “Domain”, it should be left blank.
*If the device says “Username”, then enter the full Hotmail address.
(On some devices, the Domain/Username may be pre-populated incorrectly and should be erased.)
  5. Enter your Hotmail password (it may already be filled in).
  6. Enter m.hotmail.com in the Server name field. (If the field is already filled in, make any necessary changes.)
(Note: this field may be pre-populated incorrectly depending on device, ie outlook.com.)
  7. Make sure the Use secure connection (SSL) box is checked, and unchecked the Accept all SSL certificates box, and then tap Next.
  8. Choose your account options, and then tap Next.
You might be asked to choose an account color and account name (you can use Hotmail for the account name).
  9. Tap Next to finish setup.
If these steps don’t work, you can always access Hotmail through your phone’s browser at www.hotmail.com.

Get Hotmail on your iPhone

Setting up Hotmail on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch is easy and free.

  • Get your email the instant it comes in—notifications let you know when you have a new message.
  • Calendar and contacts are synced to your phone.
  • All of your Hotmail folders and subfolders are browsable.
  • Send photos via email from your phone to your friends.
Setting up Hotmail is easy when using an iPhone with iOS 5. (If you don’t have iOS 5 yet, you can get it by connecting your iPhone, iPod touch, or iPad to your PC—just follow the instructions in iTunes.)

iOS 5

  1. Tap Settings, then tap Mail, Contacts, Calendar.
  2. Tap Add Account in the Accounts page.
  3. Tap Hotmail.
  4. Tap Hotmail to add your Hotmail account to your iPhone.

  5. Enter your full Hotmail email address and password. In the Description field, enter a name so you can identify this account when you check your email (for example, “Hotmail”).
  6. Enter your Hotmail address and password to your iPhone.

  7. Select the fields that you want to sync (they should say ON if you want them to sync). Tap Save.
  8. Choose what you'd like to sync to your iPhone.

If you don’t have iOS 5, it’s easy to get it on your iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad. Connect your device to your PC and follow the instructions in iTunes. If you don’t want to or can’t install iOS 5, it's still easy to get Hotmail on your iPhone.

Non-iOS 5

  1. Tap Settings, then tap Mail, Contacts, Calendar.
  2. Tap Add Account in the Accounts page.
  3. Tap Microsoft Exchange.
  4. Enter your name, your Hotmail address, and your Hotmail password. Leave Domain blank.
  5. Enter a description and then tap Next.
  6. If the previous steps succeeded, you’ll see a page listing Mail, Contacts, and Calendar with options to turn these on or off. Select the fields that you want to sync (they should say ON if you want them to sync). Tap Save.

Get Hotmail on your Windows Phone 7

Setting up Hotmail on your Windows Phone is easy and free.* When you sync Hotmail to your phone, you can:

  • Manage your inbox, including reading, deleting, composing, and replying to email messages.
  • Access your Hotmail folders, contacts, and calendar.
  • Send photos and videos.
  • Get notified when you have new messages.
When you first set up your Windows Phone, you're asked to sign in with your Windows Live ID (that’s the same as your Hotmail address). If you didn't sign in then―or if you have more than one Windows Live ID—follow these steps:

  1. On Start, flick left to the App list, tap Settings, and then tap Email & accounts.
  2. Tap Add an account, and then tap Windows Live.
  3. If you didn’t sign in with a Windows Live ID during setup, the Before you sign in screen appears. On this screen, tap Next.
  4. Tap the Windows Live ID box, and then type your Windows Live ID.
  5. Tap the Password box, and then type your Windows Live password.
  6. Tap Sign in.
Note

  • The first Windows Live account that you set up can't be deleted from your phone.
If you set up additional Windows Live IDs on your phone, photos in those additional accounts won't be synced to your phone. For this reason, we recommend maintaining only one Windows Live ID, and using Hotmail's aliasing feature to create multiple email addresses if you need them.

*Subject to a data plan or wireless network connection. Availability of features might vary by smartphone.
